What is the first drug of choice for hypertension?

The first-line drug of choice for hypertension is usually a thiazide diuretic, such as hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, or indapamide. These medications act on the kidneys to reduce the amount of salt and water in the body, thus reducing the amount of fluid in the blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Other medications, such as calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may be used as additional or alternative treatments.
