Why do they taste different? Not positive, but I think it's because the ratio of peanut butter filling to chocolate coating is different in the seasonal treats than in the regular peanut butter cups. Years ago, Reese's offered peanut butter cups with a double chocolate coating, and they definitely tasted different.
