Electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light and ultraviolet radiation, require a medium to travel through, and cannot pass through a vacuum. Other types of waves, such as sound waves and seismic waves, also require a medium to travel through, but these waves can be transmitted through gases and liquids, whereas electromagnetic waves require a solid medium.
