Is variance smaller than standard deviation?

Why is variance better than standard deviation?

Variance is a better measure of the spread of data than standard deviation because it gives a more accurate picture of the data’s dispersion. Variance takes into account every single observation in a dataset while standard deviation only takes into account the mean. Variance is also more sensitive to outliers, which often have a large impact on the overall spread of a dataset. Variance is also unitless, meaning it can be compared across different datasets, whereas standard deviation is not.
