Background. Karen Blixen moved to British East Africa in late 1913, at the age of 28, to marry her second cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, and make a life in the British colony known today as Kenya.
Karen Blixen followed her father's footsteps and contracted the disease while seeking out her own colonial adventure. She was thirty and living in Kenya when she was infected by her husband, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecky.
When Blixen left Kenya at the age of 46, she was penniless due to the failure of her coffee plantation. She returned to Rungstedlund, the house where she was born, and was dependent on her family for financial support for the rest of her life.
Blixen is best known for Out of Africa, an account of her life while living in Kenya, and for one of her stories, Babette's Feast, both of which have been adapted into Academy Award–winning motion pictures….
