A couple of questions

What enzymes break down fructans?

The Fibractase supplements from Intoleran contain the enzym alpha galactosidase. This enzyme helps your body to break down fructans and galactans, two of the most important FODMAP groups. What is this? Fructans are found in garlic, onion, wheat and several fruits.Oct 16, 2018

What bacteria break down fructans?

Humans lack digestive enzymes to break down fructans' β-(2→1) linkages, making them indigestible fibers [16,19,21]. However, bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species produce the 2,1-β-d-fructan-fructanohydrolase enzyme to hydrolyze these fibers [23].

How are fructans digested?

Unlike glucose, fructans are not efficiently digested or absorbed by the small intestine. The mechanism for malabsorption is related to the inability to hydrolyze glycosidic linkages in the complex polysaccharide, resulting in the delivery of malabsorbed fructans to the large bowel1.

What enzyme breaks down FODMAPs?

Alpha-galactosidase: This is an enzyme that helps break down certain oligosaccharides (the “O” in FODMAPs). It tends to be most active in breaking down raffinose and stachyose, galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) found in beans, peas, cabbage, some whole grains, broccoli and some other vegetables.

Do digestive enzymes help with FODMAPs?

They are useful in enabling people to follow a less restrictive diet long term, as the enzymes digest the FODMAPs they are sensitive to, and thus enable them to eat more GOS and/or lactose rich foods.

Is inulin a fructan?

Inulin belongs to the fructan group of polysaccharides and serves as a carbohydrate storage in many plant species. Compounds such as inulin reduce the energy density of food and are used to enrich food with dietary fibre or to replace sugar and fat.

Are fructans prebiotics?

Fructans are natural fructose polymers that are used for their prebiotic and health improving properties in functional foods. Although the immunomodulatory effects of fructans on animal cells are known, their mode of action has only recently been unraveled.

How do you deal with a fructan intolerance?

Fructans fall into the oligosaccharides group. A low-FODMAP diet avoids foods high in these sugars and fibers because they're easily fermented by intestinal bacteria, leading to IBS symptoms. If you suspect a fructan intolerance, the best approach is to avoid fructans for two to four weeks.
