The film is based upon the autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen, which recounts her experiences living in Kenya during the 1920s. The film tells the story of a strong-willed Danish baroness and plantation owner, Karen Blixen, who struggles to keep her coffee plantation in British East Africa afloat during World War I. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress, and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. It also won numerous other awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
