Do humans chew side to side?

Humans typically chew their food using a combination of side-to-side and up-and-down movements. This is known as the masticatory cycle. Humans use the masticatory cycle to break food down into smaller pieces that can be easily swallowed and digested. The side-to-side chewing motion helps to grind food into smaller pieces, while the up-and-down motion helps to move food between the teeth.

Is it normal to chew side to side?

Chewing side to side is sometimes a sign of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, which is a condition that affects the jaw joint and the muscles that control it. If you have this condition, you may experience jaw pain, stiffness, or clicking when you chew. Other signs of TMJ disorder include difficulty opening and closing your mouth and headaches. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Do people chew with both sides of their mouth at the same time?

Chewing is usually a unilateral activity, meaning that most people only chew on one side of their mouth at a time. However, some people may be able to chew with both sides of their mouth at the same time since the muscles of the jaw are used in the chewing process. It is also possible to chew with the side of the tongue or with both jaws together, which is known as «bilateral» chewing. This type of chewing is more difficult and takes more coordination than unilateral chewing.
