Why did I get alopecia?

Current evidence suggests that alopecia areata is caused by an abnormality in the immune system that damages hair follicles. This particular abnormality leads to autoimmunity, a misguided immune system that tends to attack its own body. As a result, the immune system attacks particular tissues of the body.

What is the main cause for alopecia?

The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition that happens with aging. This condition is called androgenic alopecia, male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness.

Can you randomly get alopecia?

Alopecia is unpredictable. While some people respond to treatment and regrow their hair, there's also the risk of alopecia totalis progressing. You could begin to lose hair on other parts of your body, including your eyebrows, legs, arms, nostrils, and groin area.

Can your hair grow back if you have alopecia?

There is no cure for alopecia areata. If you have a few, small patches of hair loss on your head, it's likely your hair will grow back within a few months. Your doctor may not prescribe treatment in those cases. For larger areas of hair loss, your doctor may prescribe steroid injections under your scalp.

Can you get alopecia just once?

Alopecia areata often happens once and then there is regrowth of normal hair. Sometimes, recurrent episodes of hair loss may occur with periods of regrowth. This may occur over many years. Alopecia universalis − the name for complete loss of hair on the head, face and body.

Does alopecia ever go away?

Thankfully, mild cases of alopecia areata often get better without treatment within a few months to a year. In some cases, patchy baldness may come and go over many months or years. The size of the bald patch or patches and how long they last are quite variable.

Is alopecia caused by stress?

It is possible that extreme stress, combined with genetics and immune system problems, could trigger alopecia areata and universalis. No medical studies have proven this link, however. Hair loss caused by stress is known as telogen effluvium.

What causes female alopecia?
