It isn’t always easy to find a cheap ergonomic chair or low cost ergonomic office chair. Incorrect ergonomics can cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and other medical issues. Whenever people shop for chairs and desks for the home or office, they’re not usually looking for something that is good for their bodies, but more about what looks good or is low cost, cheap or what’s on sale.
Beware of faulty ergonomics! When you shop for ergonomic desk chair, do not be lured just by the word ”ergonomic.” Not all ergonomic chairs mean comfort. Unfortunately, there are no standard rules for manufacturing ergonomic furniture yet. Hence, there might be cases where the desk chair may not be as comfortable as it was promised to be. The best way is to look around in a variety of stores and then make the choice. I would suggest sitting on the ergonomic desk chair displayed in the store to determine its comfort level. Alternatively, you can shop from reputed stores, if you are shopping online.
Ergonomics therefore is a triangular relationship between the environment, the equipment and the human. There is no set formula; it remains the same in any environment that includes humans / machines, or equipment. My knowledge as an Occupational Therapist and my personal experience with a congenital back disorder and osteoarthritis in both hands, will guide you through correct principles for ergonomic performance and safety.
Ergonomic chairs have supports and extra padding for creating comfort, but are they doing the right job for ergonomics? In my other articles, I explain that ergonomics is about using productive movements for performance. An ergonomic chair will not keep your movements safe, because you have to move to be ergonomic. The chair may protect your back from movement, but not sitting in a dynamic position. Your body needs constant movement in the pelvis, for strengthening the sitting position. If you want to your body to be ergonomic in daily life, then there are 3 key elements to use in your body: Your body needs movement, flexibility and strength to be ergonomic in activity.
Meaning of Ergonomics. Ergonomics is basically a science of designing equipment and the workplace so that the user can fit well and so that the furniture also meets all the needs of the user. Ergonomic design should prevent the worker from repetitive strain injuries that can increase over time and can lead to a long-term disability. To maintain high spirited, fit and a productive workspace, the user must use ergonomic furniture. Ergonomics is used to accomplish two goals; health and productivity.
