Who should take Areds?

AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) is a clinical trial designed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation on the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study recommends that people at high risk for developing advanced AMD take a daily dietary supplement containing antioxidants and zinc. This supplement is known as the AREDS formulation. People who are at high risk for developing AMD include those who have intermediate AMD in one or both eyes, advanced AMD in one eye, and no AMD in the other eye. People who have early signs of AMD in both eyes are also recommended to take the AREDS formulation.

Who should not take AREDS?

People who are allergic to any ingredients in the AREDS vitamin formula, those taking other medications that may interact with the vitamins, people with macular degeneration who have heavily pigmented eyes, and pregnant and nursing mothers should not take AREDS supplements. Additionally, people with diabetes, high cholesterol, and/or high blood pressure should consult their doctor or healthcare professional before taking AREDS supplements.

Should I take AREDS if I don’t have macular degeneration?

It is recommended to take the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) supplement if you have been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, it is not recommended to take AREDS if you do not have AMD, as there is no evidence that it will provide any benefits for those without AMD. If you are concerned about the health of your eyes, it is best to consult with your doctor or an ophthalmologist.
